DetailsAbout

When Bremen International Model United Nations first took place in 2004, it was a novel concept in that it was the first university-level MUN-Conference in northern Germany that was aimed specifically at delegates from every part of the world. It succeeded from the very beginning in attracting the attention of students from places as far apart and diverse as, for example, China, Rwanda, and Sweden. After the first conference in 2004, BRIMUN 2005 proved an even bigger success: more than 200 delegates, many of whom had enjoyed the first conference so much that they decided to return, travelled to Bremen and helped raise the bar considerably. The International University Bremen MUN Society is hosting, on the campus of IUB, yet another BRIMUN, and we are confident that it will not only fulfil, but exceed the expectations raised by the previous conferences.

The largest student organization at IUB, the MUN Society represents an excellent cross-section of the student population of IUB. At this truly international university – more than 70 nationalities form what is probably one of the most diverse student bodies in Europe – it is only natural that people are eager to discuss international politics and learn about the views of other countries. The IUB MUN Society provides a forum for these people, and the more than 50 members of the society in turn endeavour to organize for you a great conference, including all relevant aspects: meeting new people from places you didn’t even know existed, engaging with them in heated debates, and partying with them just as intensely.

IUB and the surrounding city of Bremen are the perfect location for such an event. Centrally located in Europe, Bremen is a mid-sized German city (600,000 inhabitants) offering something for every delegate’s taste: plenty of history (the city was founded more than 1200 years ago); a well-known soccer team; great nightlife with a huge variety of bars, clubs, and discos; etc, etc. While Bremen offers these entertaining activities off campus, IUB provides state-of-the-art seminar rooms and numerous other amenities on campus.

2006 marks a change in leadership at BRIMUN: Gero Elerd, the founder of the IUB MUN Society, has left IUB, and so have many other people that greatly contributed to the instant success of BRIMUN. But, assisted by hard-working and dedicated staff, we will make every effort to follow in their footsteps.

2006 also marks the year that many had hoped would see significant changes within the United Nations. In 2004, Secretary-General Kofi Annan mandated a High-level Panel to draw up a plan to fundamentally reform the structure of the United Nations. Building on its proposals, which were submitted in January 2005, Mr. Annan himself made a number of recommendations, to be considered by world leaders at their summit in New York in September 2005. However, the outcomes of painstaking negotiations until the very beginning of the summit were sobering, resulting in little substantial change. Since we value realism as much as innovation, we will simulate some of the established committees and bodies, but at the same time challenge you, the delegates, to master the one new forum that was engendered and one rarely simulated body. Our admissions department will ensure that the size of these committees will conform to our idea of a relatively small, yet high-quality conference, and will thus foster each delegate’s ability to actively participate in the debates.

We assure you that we will do our part in writing another chapter in the successful history of BRIMUN. All we need now are intelligent, motivated, and dedicated delegates who are eager to broaden their knowledge of International Relations and to cooperate with others to find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. In short, we need: YOU!

That is why we should like to cordially invite you to the third Bremen International Model United Nations Conference in April 2006.

We are very much looking forward to meeting you then!

Best Regards,

Cornelia Scheitz, Director-General of BRIMUN 2006
Mitja Müller, Secretary-General of BRIMUN 2006
