The importance of the internet as a communications tool increases daily. Most Canadian youth who grew up using computers are not able to imagine a world without websites and emails. This is why the United Nations wants input from Canadian young people on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) affects their lives now, and how it will affect them in the future.
Background:
This November in Tunis, Tunisia, heads of state and governments, business leaders and civil society groups from around the world will gather for the 2nd Phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). They will discuss the issues and direction surrounding ICTs such as the digital divide.
Young people, as the largest stakeholders in ICTs and its implication will receive strong representation. The Canadian National Information Society Youth Campaign will gather input from Canadian youth to bring to these meetings. The national youth campaign highlights the need for youth participation in decision-making and policy process at WSIS and other such events.
The Event:
TakingITGlobal and the City of Vancouver will hold a Youth Forum on the Information Society on Wednesday August 24th the Vancouver City Hall. This is part of the National campaign which is holding similar forums in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vaughan and Vancouver. In the open forum, youth will explore how to strengthen youth presence in the information society. It will use roundtable discussions to create local and global action plans and recommendations, which TakingITGlobal will present at WSIS. The open forum also presents an opportunity to build a network among Canadian young people.
TakingITGlobal welcomes your participation in the open forum. By representing your views and interests, this forum will be “Taking ICTs Local” by empowering local actions in the global policy process. For more information, contact Anka Raskin at anka.raskin@vancouver.ca
