Climate Change has emerged as the single biggest global issue confronting humankind this century. Unless addressed with utmost impetus, climate change is very likely to fulfill its potential of engendering a global extinction. Recent scientific investigations conclude that CO2 levels in the atmosphere need to be brought down to 350 ppmv, in order to offset the most dangerous impacts of climate change. Nations around the world have realized the nature of this severity and gravity of climate change, and are contemplating various approaches to mitigate climate change. The negotiation of the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol has necessitated 37 developed nations to commit themselves to nominal emissions reductions. The next few years will witness intense negotiations to conclude an international climate treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol after 2012.
While these negotiations will occur at a diplomatic level, there will be substantial consultation and participation from various other segments of population influencing the outcome of the treaty, such as industry, scientific fraternity, civil society, and youth.Youth have a major stake in climate change mitigation in general and in the outcome of the climate change treaty in particular. There is already significant mobilization of youth at the international level involved in articulating national and international efforts to reduce emissions. In particular, some nations have a strong youth network fostering youth leadership and dialogue on climate change. However, such youth dialogue on climate change hardly exists in India, despite India being a major emitter of GHGs, and a prominent player in the climate regime globally. There is an immediate need to create a national network of youth concerned with climate change, and to synchronize this with the global movement against climate change. Additionally, the voices and viewpoints of Indian youth on climate change needs to be captured and reflected.
Young people across India have identified this absence of youth aspirations on climate change as a concern, and have decided to hold a national youth conference on climate change in August 2008, in Hyderabad. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for youth to define climate change from their viewpoint and to engage in dialogue on possible solutions through steadfast and resolute action, in order to fight climate change and to propagate the values and principles of sustainable development.
The objectives of this workshop are:
1. To facilitate exchange of ideas and sharing of techniques and practices on climate change mitigation that can be replicated by youth across India
2. To create a national youth charter/declaration on climate change that will be representative of Indian youth’ aspirations on climate change
3. To produce a youth alternative to the post 2012 international climate regime
4. To create a team of youth representing Indian youth at the UNFCCC CoP/CMP 14 in Poland in December, 2008.
5. To forge a nationwide partnership of youth under the aegis of the Indian Youth Climate Network
6. To present and exchange innovative and creative ideas of expression on climate change through posters, roleplays etc.
Participants at this conference will include:
1. Youth from educational institutions, organizations or young individuals from across India
2. Selected specialists and eminent speakers on climate change from a range of sectors from across India
3. Teachers and social activists working on climate change and sustainable development related issues
Expected outcomes of the conference:
1. A national youth charter/declaration on climate change that will reflect the aspirations of Indian youth
2. A youth vision/alternative to the successor of the Kyoto Protocol post 2012
3. A national youth delegation to represent Indian youth at the UNFCCC CoP 14 in Poland in December 2008.
