The GYSD which shall be hosted under YPWC shall involve a three stage approach geared at creating awareness on the MDGs and also inspiring youth to take action. The first stage will involve the creating of awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) among young people between the ages of 5 and 14 years. These categories of people who are a “new generation” within the Gyenyasi community are not aware of the MDGs and how they can contribute their own quota towards its realization. YPWC hopes to establish an MDG clubs in the Gyenyasi Community. There will be an identification and training of MDGs Youth Ambassadors that will lead the clubs. A Marketing Campaign to increase awareness of the MDGs. The campaign will include the development and maintenance of YPWC’s website, design and distribution of handbills, posters, stickers, and billboards, and distribution of supporting materials including action guides to Ambassadors and student representatives. There will also be the involvement of national and local media through a media relations plan that will. The second stage will involve assisting pupils in the writing of a declaration on the Goal 7 (Ensure environmental sustainability) of the MDGs at this time when climate change has become a critical issue in development. Students will be assisted to answer questions such as 1.Why is it important to achieve the MDGs 7? 2. What do you think are some of the best ways or practices that the Government of Ghana or your country, world leaders, politicians, donor agencies and international institutions or organizations can adopt and work withon to achieve the MDGs 7?. Responses to these questions from youth and teachers of schools or institutions are going to be compiled into a booklet that will be titled “MDGs 7 Advocacy Declarations…voices of young people”. This will be sent to the United Nations Headquarters and other concerned institutions for consideration including the local government representative. The third stage will involve an action on the Goal 7 of the MDGs as a youth contribution. Seedlings are going to be planted on a land that has been given to YPWC near the Gyenyasi Junior High School in the Gyenyasi community. It will be a woodlot for the community. This is expected to serve as congenial place where students can have group discussions or study. There will be the involvement of national and local media through a media relations plan that will ensure widespread awareness of the issues and newsworthy stories of youth in this action project.
Youth volunteers will further have the opportunity to learn how to plant trees and manage the trees. This will improve their tree planting skills.
The Human Resource Capacity Building aspect of the project will also help youth volunteers to be able to:
a. Speak effectively in public;
b. Build an effective human relation;
c. And also improve their (time) management skills.
All these will help in improving the self esteem of youth volunteer to make them to march-up and have a healthy competition for opportunities with other youth who have had these kinds of opportunities in the other part of the Ashanti Region.
