For many people, economic development means jobs, prosperity, and a higher standard of living. Many countries today are industrializing and becoming more affluent, lifting millions from poverty and allowing them to live more comfortable lives. While this is beneficial, increasing these kinds of human activities strains our natural resources and affects the environment we live in. However, the world’s wealthiest nations consume the most resources and produce the most pollutants, even though they have access to cleaner technologies. Most scientists today agree that human-driven climate change is occurring, and that immediate action is required to reverse its damaging effects.
How can we protect the environment while encouraging economic growth and development to better people’s lives? High school students will represent leaders from countries around the world as they formulate an international agreement to reduce carbon emissions, working through many of the challenges and trade-offs involved in making important decisions about the environment and the economy.
