The Canadians For Kyoto Rally Against Climate Change is an independent initiative whose ultimate goal is to have Canada recommit to the Kyoto Protocol.
We aim to achieve this goal through the following actions:
1. Building consensus with environmental groups, labour organizations, members of the business community, and the general public
2. Securing prominent speakers and musical performers who are strong advocates of the Kyoto Protocol
3. Securing prominent speakers from each of the four major national political parties
4. Bringing all these groups together at rallies across the country
5. Receiving national media coverage to raise the profile of the issue with all Canadians
6. Helping to make climate change the number one issue in the next federal election
UNCHECKED CLIMATE CHANGE WILL CAUSE MASSIVE HUMANITARIAN AND ECONOMIC DISASTER
What's happening?
If we continue on our current path (based on a conservative estimate of 3 degrees of warming by 2080) a minimum of 1 to 4 billion more people will suffer water shortages, up to 175 million more people will experience coastal flooding each year, 150 to 550 additional millions will be at risk of hunger and 20 to 50% of the world's species will face extinction. The overall costs and risks of climate change will be equivalent to losing at least 5% of global GDP each year, now and forever. If a wider range of risks and impacts is taken into account (i.e. more warming) the estimates of damage could rise to 20% of GDP or more. [1]
So what do we do?
A lot of projections have been made but it seems clear that the worst impacts of climate change can be avoided if we reduce current greenhouse gas emissions by between 70 to 90% within the next 25 to 40 years. The only way this goal can be met is with cohesive international action. The Kyoto Protocol is the first baby-step in this direction. It calls for a mere 5.2% reduction below 1990 levels by 2012.
