DetailsAbout
Over half of all new infections worldwide each year are among young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Everyday, more than 5,000 young people become infected with HIV – more than five every minute. Yet the needs of the world’s over one billion young people are often ignored when strategies on HIV/AIDS are drafted, policies developed, and budgets allocated. This is especially tragic as young people are more likely than adults to adopt and maintain safe behaviours. Young people are vulnerable to HIV infection because they lack the crucial information, education, and services to protect themselves.

Zimbabwean youths also have not been spared this human tragedy crisis HIV/AIDS. In responding to this the government through its Ministry of Youth Development and Employment Creation, Ministry of Health and other youth stakeholders managed to develop and implement effective strategies in addressing this issue. The Ministry of Youth Development and Employment creation through wider consultations from all youth stakeholders produced a National Youth Policy that seek to promote young peoples’ rights to information and services. The policy strongly emphasizes and promotes the right to meaningful youth involvement and participation in all areas especially those, which affect them.

Toronto, Canada will host the XVI International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2006) from August 13th-18th 2006. AIDS 2006 is expected to be the largest conference on a single health issue, with 20 000 researchers, government leaders, community workers, activists, and people living with HIV/AIDS. The participation of young people at this all-important event is very crucial in addressing the AIDS pandemic, considering that young people are the most affected in the current society.

It is in this regard that the United Nations Youth Association of Zimbabwe whose objective among other objectives is to expose youths to international forums where they can effectively and meaningfully participate in addressing issues that affect them would be sending 8 youths to this conference. The youth delegation shall consist of members of the UNYA Executive and 2 youths chosen by the Zimbabwe Youth Council. The delegation shall present and share the Zimbabwe Youth Situation and experience in responding the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

In light of this, the UNYA of Zimbabwe will be hosting a Dinner Dance to raise funds for these youth to attend this crucial conference in August 2006.
